Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a challenging clinical conundrum frequently encountered by chronic pain physicians. As a generally safer opioid, buprenorphine provides another tool in the pain physician’s toolbox to treat this vulnerable population for pain and addiction. To treat OUD patients with buprenorphine, one is best served with further education on the topic. For physicians, this has traditionally been an eight-hour training, either all done online or a half/half training, i.e. four hours online and four hours in-person (or virtual).
This virtual course for pain fellows comprises the second half of the relevant training and education to better understand how to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. The instructor, Dr. Sudheer Potru, is an assistant professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and a triple-board-certified anesthesiologist, pain physician, and addiction medicine specialist who actively prescribes buprenorphine for both pain and opioid use disorder.
