This is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship. The mission of the pain medicine fellowship at Albany Medical Center is to provide comprehensive training in acute, chronic, and interventional pain management. This one-year Fellowship Program is fully accredited by the ACGME. It is an integral part of the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University. Graduates of the program are eligible to continue their examination progress towards subspecialty certification in Pain Medicine. The fundamental goal of the Pain Medicine Fellowship program is to train excellent pain clinicians, future educators, leaders and investigators in the field. This is done through a carefully structured mentored experience, providing comprehensive, team-based interdisciplinary patient-centered care. Over the course of this year, we provide an opportunity to develop increasing autonomy towards the achievement of demonstrated competence in the treatment of acute, chronic, and cancer pain in adult and pediatric patients. The program is complemented by a comprehensive multidisciplinary didactic curriculum, with opportunities for basic and clinical research.
The patient diversity affords exposure to a variety of pain problems that develop competencies and skills needed to respond to the dynamic health care needs of patients across cultural and socioeconomic boundaries. They become facile at the art and science of integrating pain treatment with primary disease management.
All core faculty members in the Pain Division are dedicated to compassionate, respectful, patient-centered care, while using stylistically distinct approaches to therapeutics and staying bound by ethical, evidence and value-based guidelines. The comprehensive training allows Pain Medicine fellows to broaden perspectives and develop the awareness needed to adopt practice styles consistent with future career plans.
Fellows who graduate from the Columbia Pain Medicine Fellowship program document a procedural and clinical experience that exceeds ACGME requirements and seamlessly prepares them for independent practice. Through direct observation and feedback from faculty and inter-professional team members, the fellows can self-reflect and evaluate their personal clinical effectiveness to improve their own skills. This experience, in association with research/scholarly activities, helps to develop all aspects of the expert consultant. Formal feedback on their competency development, aided by a self-reflective learning portfolio process, helps the fellow in establishing and monitoring individualized learning plans. The fellows are expected to take the Pain Medicine In-Training Exam in the latter half of the fellowship year, as a measure of their acquisition of medical knowledge regarding Pain Medicine in anticipation of the actual subspecialty certification examination.

Emory’s Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month ACGME-accredited program providing intensive training in the evaluation and management of pain. The department of anesthesiology offers four positions yearly (three in July and one in January) for a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship supported by Henry Ford Health System, one of the largest and most respected integrated health care delivery systems in the country. The fellowship program began in 2002 and has graduated four fellows per year since its inception. The goal of the pain medicine fellowship is to provide trainees with a multidisciplinary environment conducive to acquiring the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and attitudes that are essential for becoming an exceptional pain medicine physician. Both the faculty and the sponsoring institution are fully committed to providing the educational programs, resources, and facilities necessary to meet this goal. Fellows will be exposed to a variety of administrative experiences, through participation in departmental committees on curriculum, applicant selection, didactics, quality improvement/assessment, and other committees.
Upon completion of this program, our fellows have acquired the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to develop their own pain center and are able to evaluate and treat all types of painful conditions, using both conventional and alternative therapies, including the latest invasive technologies.
Fellows receive extensive training in the multidisciplinary evaluation and management of acute pain and both malignant and non-malignant chronic pain. Furthermore, our program is unique in that we offer training in both the pharmacological and psychological management of pain states, as well as training in invasive management including neuromodulation and the placement of spinal cord stimulators, epidural and intrathecal pumps, radiofrequency thermocoagulation, discography, neurolytic blockade, and fluoroscopically guided procedures. In addition, trainees have the opportunity to learn about complementary medical management such as acupuncture and massage therapy.

The Multidisciplinary Anesthesia Pain Fellowship at the IU School of Medicine is a one-year, fully ACGME accredited post-residency program that provides comprehensive training in chronic pain management. It is conducted predominantly on the campus of IU Health at the University Hospital and the Roudebush VA Medical Center. A short amount of time is spent at Riley Hospital for Children to familiarize fellows with the potential needs of pediatric patients transitioning to adult care. The focus of the fellowship is training in interventional pain management of the adult patient. Being multidisciplinary, fellows rotate through other departments to round out their knowledge of pain rehabilitation, palliative care for terminal illness, neurology, neuroradiology, as well as psychiatry and addiction. Elemental to interventional training is our focus on performing fluoroscopically directed interventional blocks at our campus same day surgery center and the VA pain suite. We do many interventions such as Vertiflex and MILD procedures to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, as well as Kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures, and OsteoCool therapy for spinal metastatic disease. Additionally, peripheral pain syndromes are frequently managed with Sprint PNS therapy, epidural steroid injections, facet join injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency nerve ablations and SI joint interventions. Advanced pain therapies using long term intrathecal spinal pumps and epidurally placed spinal stimulators are useful for advanced cancer pain, failed back syndrome and chronic abdominal pain from pancreatic disease. Management of anterior column pain can also be achieved utilizing intradiscal hydration (ViaDisc) and radiofrequency basivertebral nerve ablation (Intracept). Clinic exposure will focus on the understanding pathology, clinical presentation, management of a vast array of painful conditions, essential follow-up care, suturing and wound checks, intrathecal pump refills, and complex stimulator programing. As pain is often initially separated into spinal vs non-spinal pain, a rotation in neuroradiology will provide the fellow with excellent analytical skills in assessing spinal films, CT scans, and MRIs – all key to successfully interacting with neurosurgeons and performing appropriate advanced interventions.

The one-year, ACMGE-accredited pain medicine fellowship program at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Arizona provides a comprehensive training environment for fellows. As a fellow, you will work closely with numerous faculty members that have shown excellence in graduate medical education. Our faculty works closely with each fellow in order to tailor the program to your specific educational needs and career goals. Core faculty members are trained in anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and psychology.
There is a structured didactic curriculum that has been designed to create success for fellows in clinical practice and to ensure preparation for subspecialty board certification in pain medicine. The core of the program relies on staffing a diverse, interventional pain practice at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. In addition, rotations in private practice, cancer pain, palliative care, headache, neurology, hospice, and pain rehabilitation add to the multidisciplinary education of our pain fellows. A unique one-week anatomy course gives fellows an opportunity to learn and improve on the performance of advanced pain procedures and is one of the highlights of the program. There are also elective educational opportunities available in neuroradiology, electromyography, and pediatric pain as well as global health activities that are funded through the Mayo International Health Program. Fellows also participate in scholarly activity including quality improvement projects, submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at national conferences. Fellows are an integral part of the education of anesthesiology residents and medical students. After successful completion of the pain medicine fellowship, trainees will be highly qualified pain specialists that are ready for the demands of private practice or academics.

The Montefiore Medical Center Department of PMR Pain Medicine Fellowship is the largest ACGME-accredited PMR pain program in the country. We are the main medical provider in a community of over 3 million. Our mission is to decrease pain and improve function in our community using responsible pharmacological mindedness, sound clinical judgement, and good science with an integration of the newest interventional techniques. Incepted in the 2011-2012 academic year, we have graduated 36 fellows to date. As a pain management fellow within the department of anesthesiology, you learn interventional, multimodal, and multidisciplinary approaches to managing a wide variety of acute and chronic pain conditions. The fellowship is offered at a busy pain management practice on the West Side of Manhattan. The Ochsner Pain Medicine Fellowship aims is to provide the next generation of pain medicine physicians with exceptional clinical and procedural experience and knowledge. Our fellows will become a consultant in pain management who are able to work with a multidisciplinary team to manage acute and chronic pain patients, including cancer pain, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Enhancing communication skills as a team and with patient care (clinical and procedural) is a key component to performance as well. Ochsner Baptist campus is the primary teaching facility offering a one-year multidisciplinary fellowship training. Rotation length and specialty training include 9.5 months of chronic pain medicine rotations (Ochsner Baptist & Kenner), and 2.5 months of palliative care, PMR, acute pain, addiction psychiatry, and neurology. Fellows learn to perform initial assessments, treatment planning, documentation, pharmacological treatment, appropriate diagnostic testing, and enhancing procedural skills for treatments specific to chronic pain. Ochsner Baptist is home to the pain medicine fellowship and the Back and Spine Clinic located in the Napoleon Medical Plaza. We offer a 1-year ACGME fellowship in interdisciplinary pain medicine. Our core faculty come from anesthesia, neurology, physiatry, internal medicine, and psychology. All faculty and fellows work in a co-located center eliminating the need to rotate out fellows to meet ACGME requirements. We seek to educate the fellow in and have dedicated faculty groups focusing on neuromodulation, orofacial/headache, spine, abdominal, pelvic, peripheral nerve/CRPS, pediatrics, and cancer. Fellows get exposure to pain psychology and pain physical therapy co-located in our pain clinic. Fellows will learn how to lead interdisciplinary groups of clinicians. Fellows have a continuity clinic whereby they will manage their own patients over a period of several months. We have a comprehensive inpatient pain service and consult, and run the pain service for acute on chronic and chronic patients. The Pain Medicine fellowship program consists of twelve months of post-graduate training after satisfactory completion of a residency program in Anesthesiology, Neurology, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) within the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. The fellows always exceed ACGME requirements due to a wide variety of clinical and research exposure. Pain fellows must obtain satisfactory evaluations in their primary and elective rotations leading to board certification in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The fellows are proactive in their learning by functioning as educators of the principles and techniques they learn during their fellowship. The Division of Pain Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham specializes in the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with acute, chronic, and cancer pain. Our primary goal is to provide quality patient care in a setting that utilizes the resources of a large, academic institution. Located in the UAB Highlands facility, the Pain Treatment Clinic hosts 10,000 patient visits per year, including over 1,000 new patient evaluations and approximately 5,000 interventional pain procedures each year. The University of Kansas Multidisciplinary Pain Medicine Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program administered within the department of anesthesiology. The vision of this program is to provide the most advanced training in interventional pain medicine in the country. Fellows will receive multi-disciplinary training with rotations through physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology, and psychiatry during the course of the 12-month program. The program accepts two fellows a year from an American Board of Medical Specialties accredited residency program. The core faculty of the fellowship includes six board certified pain physicians whose practice primarily involves interventional treatments to patients suffering from a variety of painful conditions. Our pain center has also been named a Center of Excellence for radiofrequency ablation for spinal cancer as well as one of the leading centers in the nation for utilization of spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal pumps for select patients with intractable pain. Common treatments provided include epidural steroid injections, facet injections, spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal pump implantation, vertebral augmentation, kyphoplasty, radiofrequency ablation, neurolytic blocks, and a multitude of other interventions. Fellows will become adept at the use of fluoroscopy and ultrasound to provide accurate and effective treatments. Significant exposure to cancer pain management and advanced interventional techniques for the management of its pain is one of the cornerstones of the fellowship. Fellows will be encouraged and provided ample opportunity to participate in research and attend at least one national pain meeting during the fellowship year.

Jefferson Pain Fellowship focuses on the multidisciplinary approach with close ties to physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery, psychiatry, neurology, and palliative care. The outpatient service is located at the Jefferson Pain Center. In the last academic year, our outpatient volume was 6,000 patient visits and approximately 200 nerve blocks per month. Our patient population commonly presents with a variety of disease processes including intervertebral disc disease, failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, post-herpetic neuralgia, and other types of neuropathic pain. Our fellows are closely integrated into our initial comprehensive patient evaluation as well as follow up visits. The pain service specializes in interventional pain management techniques under fluoroscopic and ultrasound guidance. The fellow receives exposure and experiences in the decision-making process, performance, and peri-procedure management of the following procedures and techniques, many of which are done under fluoroscopic and ultrasound guidance.

Starting in 1993 the UC San Diego Pain Medicine Fellowship has offered specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain syndromes, cancer, and acute pain. Our fellows learn to employ a multidimensional treatment approach that includes physical therapies, pharmacologic agents, psychological therapies, alternative medicine therapies, as well as a broad array of interventional techniques. The program’s multidisciplinary training of pain fellows includes core faculty from anesthesia, PM&R, and neurology. Fellows also receive training from guest lecturers and rotation faculty from psychiatry, psychology, palliative medicine, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and physical therapy. We accept fellowship applicants from any discipline that offers ABMS certification in pain medicine, including: anesthesia, physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, and others. Clinical training occurs primarily at UC San Diego Health System’s Center for Pain Medicine outpatient and procedures clinics in La Jolla and at San Diego Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) pain clinic and pain procedure suite, also in La Jolla, California. Additionally, fellows consult on inpatients at UC San Diego’s La Jolla and Hillcrest Hospitals. Fellows have rotations in psychiatry, neuroradiology and palliative care. Each fellow receives four weeks of research time in order to concentrate on a project of their choosing. Fellows are paired with a research mentor who works closely with them throughout the 12-month fellowship. Lectures on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and management of pain are held weekly and cover a wide range of topics required by the ACGME. Pain medicine grand rounds are also held weekly and include M&M case conferences, multidisciplinary grand rounds with our pain psychologists, palliative care service joint case conferences, journal clubs, radiology rounds, and research forums. All fellows take a graduate level neuroscience course on mechanisms of pain taught by UC San Diego pain clinical and research faculty.

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Pain Management Center specializes in the multidisciplinary management of patients suffering from acute, chronic, and cancer pain. The goal of the fellowship program is for the fellow to be exposed to the advanced interdisciplinary evaluation and management of acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain, and to procedures related to the treatment of these patients. Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to function as an independent, board eligible pain management physician and consultant, competent in the interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment (including advanced interventional techniques) of complicated and routine pain problems. We provide multidisciplinary assessment and treatment of the full spectrum of ambulatory pain patients. To do this effectively, we have a facility and staff dedicated to pain management. We know that ongoing pain changes a person’s life in all areas, and we are here to help. Our approach is individualized treatment because we know every person experiences pain in a different way. Our team of pain specialists look at the whole person to evaluate the pain problem and develop a plan with the patient and their referring physician to improve their quality of life and pain control. We are unique because we bring together a dedicated group of professionals to provide state-of-the-art pain assessment and treatment, research into new treatments, and coordination with patients’ health care providers. As the only academic pain center in Iowa, we bring expertise to all pain patients. We provide consultation to patients and physicians not just in Iowa City, but throughout Iowa and beyond. We provide leadership and education in the field of pain medicine for our patients, our colleagues, and our region.

UPMC Pain Management is committed to the evaluation and treatment of the entire range of pain, disability, and rehabilitation problems, from infancy to old age, including end-of-life care. It offers an interdisciplinary team approach that includes dedicated professionals from various specialties including anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychology.
The anchor of the fellowship program is the strong didactic curriculum. This includes weekly Grand Rounds by board-certified faculty, a pain medicine board review series, as well as journal clubs and Morbidity and Mortality conferences. The program encompasses the full spectrum of clinical training, from spine pain interventional management to more complex interventional procedures such as spinal cord stimulation, interventional management of abdominal and pelvic pain, and interventional management of facial pain. Radiofrequency ablation techniques and ultrasound-guided procedures are also emphasized. A multimodal, multidisciplinary strategy of pain management is a key part of the program.
A second track is available for anesthesiology residents who are interested in conducting additional clinical research and receiving clinical research training. This program is a two-year track, where year one is dedicated to clinical research and year two is the traditional clinical pain fellowship training. A third option is available for physicians who are interested in pursuing clinical or basic science research for a longer period of time and receiving more extensive research training. This track combines the traditional one-year clinical training plus another two years of research funded in part by National Institutes of Health T32 programs. These exciting and innovative opportunities present fellows with multiple avenues to reach their career goals.
The fellowship program was a winner of the American Academy of Pain Medicine’s 2016 Pain Medicine Fellowship Excellence Award and is the only program in the country that has received a maximum five-year ACGME accreditation three consecutive times.

The fellow’s year on the pain services is spent in the (chronic) Pain Management Center (PMC) and on the In-Hospital Consult Service (CPS). Approximately 60% of the time is spent in the PMC. This time is divided between clinic, seeing 8-10 patients per day, and performing 15-18 interventional procedures per day. These procedures encompass a varied assortment of pain management techniques. The daily clinic schedule is a blend of patients new to the system and revisits. 20% of the time is spent leading the CPS which runs a daily census of 5-10 consult patients. 20% of the fellow’s time is dedicated to the ACGME mandated rotations which include physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, neurology, and anesthesiology/airway management. Fellows rotate through the services that are not their primary specialty. Generally, these rotations are two weeks long.

The department of anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University is proud to direct the institution’s first and only multidisciplinary pain management fellowship. Virginia Mason Pain Medicine Fellowship offers 2 fellow positions annually. Our mission is to train future leaders of pain medicine through developing the knowledge and skills necessary to improve the health and wellbeing of the patients we serve and provide care that is appropriate, compassionate, and consistent with a patient centered paradigm throughout the spectrum of acute, chronic, perioperative, and cancer pain. We are committed to providing a top quality experience for the fellows, with a balanced and comprehensive exposure to acute and perioperative pain management, chronic pain management, and cancer pain management. Each fellowship is further tailored to meet individual objectives, with outside rotations and clinical pain research, culminating in a congenial and stimulating academic environment.

The pain medicine fellowship is for 12 months without opportunity for promotion. All program requirements for subspecialty certification in pain medicine, as outlined in the ABA Booklet of Information under “Publications” are incorporated by reference. All program requirements of the ACGME for fellow education in anesthesiology/pain medicine fellowship are incorporated by reference. Fellow performance will be assessed based on clinical and didactic curriculum completion and rotation-specific goals and objectives, as well as fulfillment of ACGME case log and duty hour reporting requirements. Fulfillment of program accountabilities, including rotational and administrative obligations as well as attendance requirements, is required for successful completion of this pain medicine fellowship. Fellows will receive informal feedback on a monthly basis. Formal evaluations will be conducted semi-annually, concurrent with ABA training report submission requirements.

Our multi-faceted, one-year program is designed to prepare a consultant for a rewarding career in pain management. Washington University Medical Center is a tertiary referral center and Level-1 trauma center. This broad clinical base gives pain management fellowship trainees an excellent opportunity to participate in managing a wide spectrum of pain problems. The trainees will have opportunities to care for patients from diverse backgrounds, different social economic statuses, and wide range of pain complexities.
